Character Advancement « Thread Started on Feb 16, 2004, 2:07pm »
Now the last but not the least point of your character creation. Or at least the the continuing of creating your character: Advancement through experience.
Advancement can be reached through playing well and keeping to the role you gave your character. Roleplaying is the most important part of this game. You can earn experience points with defeating monsters, but characters that show a lot of roleplay probably gain more points than characters that just simply show up when there is a fight and no more. You will be notified in a Personal Message by one of the Rulers when you are awarded points.
These points can be saved up or used to buy new skills from the skill list you will find below. However, you do not automatically gain these skills when you buy them. You will need to learn them as well.
Also characters that come from a world that knows no magic, cannot use magic instantly, just because you had some points left and chose an innate spell. Not even when you give your character the magic ability with your initial creation. Your character does not know he has the ability to cast the spell, so he won't be casting any spells until your character learns he/she can cast. This will always happen accidental. For instance: An innate fear could be noticed, when someone is threatening you and you say: "I guess you fear nothing, do you?" And the spell could take effect. Also you cannot choose the moment that your innate spells comes to effect the first time. The Ruler(s) that is(are) leading your topic will do that.
We are introducing a new rule to Nightshade: Skill Advancement.
From now on, people's skills will be published on a special board, called Player Advancement. Please look here when you want to know, what the advancement is that you've accomplished so far. The skills will be noted with the level and then how far you are in reaching the next level.
The 4 level are: Basic, Advanced, Experienced and Master, all in this order. Not all skills will be noted in levels. For instance wearing armor already has three levels, but will not have any levels within these levels. But onehanded weapons do. Furthermore some skills will be divided: onehanded weapons will be divided into Blunt weapons and sharp weapons.
People that already have a skill that will be divided, are lucky: They will receive both or all skills that come from that skill. Please refer to your own Player Advancement file to see what your skills are and which new skills you have.
For the skills that will be devided into levels, please check the Character Skills section on this board.
As told these levels will be divided into 5 sublevels so you can see how far your advancement is towards the next level. These sublevels will be indicated with stars (*). If you reach the fifth star you advance to the next level. If you have more sublevels than another character, this does not mean that you are better than the other person. You are still in the same level, but your advancement in that level is more than the other, this does not make you better. Please note that if you do have more levels (e.g. you are an advanced swordfighter and the other is still a beginner) this does not mean guaranteed victory. You could still loose the fight, it is just more probable that you'll win.
Now an explanation of how the skills will be noted:
The first means that you have the skill one handed sharp weapons, and that you are advanced level. The 2 stars mean that you are two steps into advancement towards experienced. The second means that you have the skill two handed blunt weapons, and that your still are at basic level. The 4 stars mean that you are almost at advanced level and you need one more star to get there.
All classes will received one or two skills in which they start at advanced level. Please look in Character Classes or the Player Advancement Board to see which skills are the advanced skills for your level.
